I recently made these for a friend of mine and she liked them so much that she requested I tell her how to make them. So, I decided to share it with all of you! This version is for the ones I make with an Orange Ginger Allspice Cinnamon sugar coating.
They are so easy! Just buy a tube of jumbo homestyle or buttermilk biscuits (regular not the butter flavor ones) and makes sure they are not the kind with layers.
Heat up about 3 inches of vegetable or canola oil in a deep pot or heat up your fryer. You can either cut the biscuits in quarters then roll them lightly into balls; or you can slightly flatten out the biscuit and use a shot glass to cut out a hole in the center leaving a perfect donut with a perfect donut hole. Leave them out on a cookie/cooling rack for about 5 minutes so they develop a bit of a crust then place them in the hot oil. Fry till brown on one side them flip. Donut holes will sometimes flip them selves. You have to watch them as they fry very quickly and you don't want them to burn. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
For the sugar, I just took about one to one and a half cups of sugar (baker's sugar works better since it's finer. you can get it at the commissary or any grocery store) and put it in a large ziploc bag. I added about 1/8 tsp pf ground allspice, 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, 1/8 tsp of ground ginger, and about 1/8 tsp of liquid orange flavoring. I sealed the bag, leaving plenty of air in it, and shook it all up until everything was well blended.
Add a few donuts to the mix, seal and shake. Voila! Add them when they are still warm/hot but not burning hot.
Feel free to play with the sugar mix and add your own spices!
